"Our journey is a testament to the unyielding spirit of those who came before us; their legacy is our guide, their strength our foundation."

As the new Chairperson of the League of Descendants of the Enslaved at Mount Vernon, the role has profound personal and historical significance for me. It is a chance to honor the lives, resilience, and untold stories of individuals like my 4th great-grandmother, Caroline Branham, whose labor and humanity shaped the foundation of this nation.

Caroline was a remarkable woman who served as a housemaid for George and Martha Washington at Mount Vernon. Born into the harsh realities of enslavement, she navigated a world of immense challenges with dignity and strength. Caroline was trusted with significant responsibilities within the Washington household, reflecting her reliability and skill. Her life is a testament to the resilience of those who, even under oppression, maintained their humanity and contributed to shaping American history. Caroline dreamed of simple freedoms—like walking the streets of Alexandria, Virginia, without fear or entering stores of her choice. Her modest yet monumental dream reflects the humanity and dignity denied to her and countless others. Caroline’s story inspires me to live and lead with purpose and dedication.

To me, this work is a sacred responsibility. It’s about honoring the sacrifices of the enslaved and carrying forward their unfulfilled dreams—dreams of freedom, dignity, and opportunity. As chairperson, I feel privileged to help preserve these stories and to create opportunities for others to connect with them on a deep, emotional level. The work of the League reminds us that history is not just something to be remembered but a force that shapes who we are today. It teaches us resilience, courage, and the ongoing fight for justice. I am humbled to serve in this role and committed to ensuring that the League continues to shine a light on the past while inspiring a brighter, more inclusive future rooted in justice, dignity, and unity.

We are the living proof of our ancestors' dreams, and through gratitude, we keep their memory alive as we continue to grow.

I look forward to being of service.

Julie
