Ancestral Burial Grounds Project

Improved acknowledgement, recognition and respect for the final resting place of the enslaved at Mount Vernon is important for Americans because it serves as a reminder of the human cost of slavery and the contributions of enslaved individuals to the history of the United States. Like most cemeteries, the burial grounds at Mount Vernon is a sacred reminder of the existence of our ancestors, and a hallowed space to acknowledge, reflect on, and honor their lives. 

The final resting place for the enslaved at Mount Vernon allows visitors to reflect on these complexities, consider the ongoing legacy of slavery and the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality, and fosters opportunities for continued education and reflection on the topic.
